Ecology

Grows at Low elevations elevations.

Commonly found in: Moist to wet meadows, shorelines, stream-banks, tidal flats, beaches.

Uses

CAUTION: Contains oxalic acid, which can be toxic in large quantities. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid ingesting dock. Can trigger hay fever and asthma.

Food
  • Roots and leaves are edible when young; seeds also edible.
Medicine
  • Juice from leaves treats blisters, burns, scalds, bruises.
  • Roots are used as an astringent and blood purifier.
  • Root tea treats jaundice, whooping cough, boils, bleeding, skin issues, liver problems, rheumatism, constipation, diarrhoea.
  • Seeds used for coughs, colds, bronchitis.
Material
  • Yellow and dark green dye can be made from the roots.
