Ecology

Grows at Low to middle elevations.

Commonly found in: At the edges of coniferous forests, under canopy openings. Likes soils rich in decaying wood (stumps, logs).

Uses

Food
  • Berries ripen in mid-July and are eaten fresh. Were also stored soaked in grease or oil, or mashed and dried as cakes.
  • Makes excellent jam and jelly.
  • High in vitamin C.
Medicine
  • Treatment for bladder and urinary tract infections, sore throats, inflamed gums, swollen joints.
