Food and Medicinal Uses:
Cambium (inner bark) was eaten fresh in spring or dried.
High in vitamin C, and an antioxidant.
Sap or inner bark is used in poultices and salves for slivers, sores, inflammation, skin infections, insect bites, cuts, burns, rashes, eczema, and snowblindness.
Gum made from sap is chewed for coughs and sore throats.
Branches are made into medicinal teas for rheumatism, kidney stones, stomach problems, and diarrhea.
Other Uses:
Rotten, dried, finely powdered wood used as baby powder and to soothe skin rashes.
